CGI inspection – Sire2.0 & RISQ3.1

Optimize your vessel performance with our innovative and high-quality boiler treatment solutions.

Compressed Gas Installations (CGI) onboard vessels normally comprise of Oxygen & Acetylene cylinder banks connected to a separate common manifold for each gas type. This line passes through decks leading into the Engine room normally Engine Workshop.
Since this line has compressed & flammable gases, hence various safety devices are installed to prevent flashback, structural failure, leakage or any other mishap.
Inspections are carried out Annually & tested every 5 years as per Check list laid down by SOLAS, British standards, Sire2.0 & RISQ3.1. Detailed checklist is followed by our service personnel. Contact us for feasible Annual onboard inspections by our trained Engineers at various ports.

The rollout for OCIMF SIRE 2.0 has been planned in four phases, with the final rollout happening by 2024. Upon which, all vessel inspections will be conducted with the updated SIRE 2.0 questionnaire. Here’s what you need to know to remain compliant for gas welding:

  • Install flashback arrestors on both torch and gas regulators for long lengths of AC-OX gas hoses.
  • Ensure the AC-OX gas hoses are in compliance with ISO 3821 / EN 559 and in good condition by performing bend test and visual inspection.
  • Ensure good safety practices by purging all remaining gases in-line and keeping the gas equipment and cylinder valves closed after completion of the work.
  • Ensure all Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for Gas Welding and Cutting use is well maintained.
  • Ensure signages and safety posters are available, especially “No Smoking” sign

The updated RightShip RISQ 3.1 questionnaire highlights the importance of pressure regulators and flashback arrestors in preventing gas-related accidents onboard, and has been recently updated with new guidelines on equipment use to further improve safety. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Inspect pressure regulators and flashback arrestors annually, and ensure all inspection data has been logged
  • Replace pressure regulators and flashback arrestors every five years from the manufacturing date.
  • All acetylene and oxygen GDS piping should be colour-coded accordingly, ie., blue for oxygen, red for acetylene.
  • Twin gas hoses should be crimp-fitted or fitted with “Clamp 1 Ear” type clamps at all joints.
  • A non-return valve or flashback arrestor must be fitted before the torch connection.
Pressure testing of on board piping system should be performed by a competent person in accordance with applicable CLASS/FLAG rules. An appropriate certificate or service record should be issued.
